British Airways Kosher Meals: Hermolis, Deadlines & Traps

Short answer: yes, British Airways serves kosher meals, and on long-haul flights the BA kosher meal is genuinely one of the better ones flying. That's less about BA and more about who cooks it. Every kosher meal loaded in London comes from Hermolis of Wembley, working under Kedassia — the hashgacha (kosher certification) of London's Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations, about as strict a standard as exists anywhere. But BA also has two traps that catch travelers every single year: an entire short-haul cabin where no special meal of any kind exists, and an ordering deadline that is stricter for kosher than for every other meal in BA's system. Hermolis has been feeding frum travelers out of its Wembley kitchen for decades. Today it turns out roughly 5,000 sealed airline meals a day for around 40 airlines, under Kedassia with KLBD (London Beth Din) certification as well. For British Airways it's the exclusive kosher supplier ex-UK — Hermolis cooks and seals, and BA's main caterer DO&CO loads the meals onto the aircraft.

BA gave the kosher menu a serious revamp in 2021 — braised brisket, poached salmon, a chocolate tart that people photographed — and the next upgrade is already in motion. In February 2026, Hermolis hosted BA's catering team for a two-day presentation of new kosher menus covering all five BA cabins, from Euro Traveller's premium sibling Club Europe up through First, with over 200 menu components tasted. No launch date has been announced yet, so treat the current menu as what you'll get until BA says otherwise.

BA's other special meals close 24 hours before departure. Kosher alone requires 48 hours — with one exception: flights departing Heathrow, where the deadline drops to 24 hours, presumably because Hermolis is a short drive from the airport. Book your KSML through Manage My Booking the day you buy the ticket and this never matters. Book a last-minute fare from anywhere other than LHR and it matters a lot.

There's also a station exclusion list: BA doesn't load kosher meals at all from a long list of airports, including Bahrain, Beijing, Cairo, Cancun, most Caribbean stations, the Indian stations, several Gulf states, Nairobi, and Shanghai. The list changes, so check ba.com for the current version before relying on a meal from anywhere off the beaten path.

One more wrinkle: codeshares. If your BA flight number is on a plane operated by American, Iberia, or another partner, the operating carrier's catering and deadlines apply, not BA's. Order the meal with the airline actually flying the plane, and confirm with them directly.

Flying over Pesach? BA publishes no Passover kosher policy. Call BA to ask what will be loaded, and if it's an ex-UK flight you can also call Hermolis directly (+44 20 8810 4321) to ask what they're producing that week.

Like every airline kosher meal, it comes double-wrapped and sealed, heated unopened in the same ovens as the regular catering — that's what makes the system work. Check the seal and the hashgacha label before the crew opens anything. This isn't paranoia: in February 2025, Air France served meals mislabeled as kosher that weren't. The label is your protection; read it. And if a meal reaches you with a broken seal or with the outer wrapping already opened, hand it back and ask whether a spare kosher meal was loaded — crews are trained to heat these unopened, but galleys get busy.

The pleasant surprise on BA is the portion. The Hermolis meal is often more generous than the standard Club World catering — it's the rare special meal your seatmate eyes with envy rather than pity. Mains are usually fleishig (meat), served on the airline's schedule but before general service, and long-haul flights typically include a sealed second meal or breakfast as well. It's still airline food heated in foil, but it's airline food made by people who cook for the Kedassia-keeping public every day.

At Heathrow, BA's Galleries lounges have been reported to stock kosher-labeled bagels and soup. Reports are inconsistent and BA doesn't publish anything official, so ask lounge staff on the day and don't build your meal plan around it — treat anything you find as a bonus.

The genuinely useful secret is in New York. At JFK Terminal 8, the joint American Airlines/BA premium lounges — Chelsea, Soho, and Greenwich — serve fresh, hot kosher meals on request, catered by Fresko under Star-K and Tartikov supervision. Not frozen wrapped trays: actual plated hot food. It's not advertised on the menu boards, so ask a lounge agent directly.
