⚠️Vet Before You Pay: The Marrakesh Cautionary Tale
Pesach 2026, Marrakesh. Roughly 600 guests paid the operator Marvaco between $10,000 and $20,000-plus per family for a program at the Zephyr Targa Hotel. The shipping container carrying the program's supplies got stuck in customs — and the first seder took place without matzah or grape juice. Guests reported moldy rooms and thefts on top of it. The lesson is not "avoid Morocco." It is that a glossy website proves nothing. Before you pay anyone, ask five questions:
- Track record. How many years have you run programs, and how many at this hotel? An operator's first year at a new property is where things break.
- References. Ask for phone numbers of last year's guests. Actual conversations, not website testimonials.
- Food sourcing. What is shipped versus bought locally, and what is the backup if a container is delayed? Marrakesh happened because nobody had an answer.
- Who is the Rav Hamachshir? That is the rabbi personally responsible for the hashgacha, the kosher supervision. Get his name and call him; a legitimate one expects the call.
- Payment method. Credit card, never wire transfer. Chargeback rights are the only leverage you have if a program collapses.
