The Short Answer on United and Kosher
Yes, United has kosher meals — free, on any international flight over 2,000 miles, on Hawaii routes, and in the premium cabins on premium transcontinental flights. That's the easy answer. The more useful question is what actually lands on your tray table, because United's kosher program is really three different programs wearing one uniform. Fly out of Newark and you may get a fresh Star-K certified meal made that day. Fly out of Denver and you'll get a frozen double-sealed tray that has been sitting in a freezer for months. Both kosher. Not remotely the same dinner.
United cut all special meals during COVID and only restored kosher in 2021 (the rest followed in 2022), so the program you see today is relatively young — and improving faster than most flyers realize. Here's how it stacks up against the other major airlines, and how to work it.
Where United's Kosher Meal Exists — and Where It Doesn't
KSML is the industry booking code for a kosher meal, and on United it's available on:
- International flights over 2,000 miles, in every cabin that gets a meal service
- Hawaii flights from the mainland
- Premium transcontinental routes (think Newark–LAX or Newark–SFO) — but only in the premium cabins
Notice what's missing: ordinary domestic flights. A four-hour Chicago–Seattle run in economy gets you a buy-on-board menu with nothing certified kosher on it, and no amount of asking nicely at the gate changes what's in the galley. Don't board hungry expecting the airline to solve it — check what kosher food exists at your departure airport and eat or pack accordingly. The 2,000-mile threshold also means some shorter international hops (Newark to Toronto, say) fall below the line, so check your specific flight for meal service before assuming a KSML option exists.
One more data point: on December 1, 2025, United expanded its special meal menu from 5 categories to 14. Kosher was unchanged in that update — it was already there — but it signals an airline putting money back into special meals rather than quietly dropping them.
⭐Three Caterers, Three Very Different Kosher Meals
This is the part nobody tells you at booking: your United kosher meal comes from one of three kitchens, and which one depends entirely on where your flight leaves from.

Hashgacha, if the term is new to you, is the rabbinic certification behind the food — and Star-K, cRc, and OU are all major, widely accepted agencies, so this isn't a kashrus concern. It's a freshness one. Fresko's ex-Newark meals and Dimensions' same-day Chicago meals are cooked hours before your flight. The Regal frozen line is perfectly kosher — glatt, meaning the stricter meat standard — and perfectly fine, but it's built for shelf life, not for the plate.
Practical upshot: if you're connecting to a long international flight and Newark or Chicago is an option, route through them. The fare difference is often small; the meal difference is not. And note the direction matters — Fresko caters the SFO–Tel Aviv and Dulles–Tel Aviv departures from the US side, but your return leg out of Tel Aviv or Frankfurt is catered locally, so don't assume the outbound experience repeats itself coming home. ⚠️The App Doesn't Always Save Your Kosher Meal
United's app has a known, maddening bug: you select the kosher meal, the screen looks like it took, and the request never actually saves to your reservation. Travelers have boarded flights convinced they ordered — some of them weeks in advance — only to find nothing loaded, because the request quietly died somewhere between the tap and United's reservation system.
The fix is boring but absolute: order your KSML on united.com through a browser, not the app. Then go back into Manage Your Booking and confirm the kosher meal is actually listed on your reservation. If it doesn't appear, call United rather than retrying the app. Two minutes on the website beats ten hours of pretzels.
💡Order Early, Then Babysit the Request
Order the kosher meal the moment you book, on united.com, at least 24 hours before departure — that's the hard cutoff. Kosher is the most-requested special meal in the industry and costs the airline roughly twice what a standard tray does, so nobody is loading extras on spec. But ordering once isn't the whole job, because special meal requests are fragile in ways airlines don't advertise:
- Any itinerary change can silently drop your KSML. Schedule change, rebooking after a cancellation, even an agent reissuing the ticket — the meal request often doesn't carry over. Re-add it immediately after any change.
- Reconfirm by phone 24–72 hours out. Ask the agent to read back the special meal on your record, not just "you're all set."
- Mind Shabbos timing. If your Thursday flight cancels and you rebook onto Sunday, re-add the meal right then — you can't call on Shabbos, and Motzei Shabbos (Saturday night) may already be inside the 24-hour cutoff.
- On travel day, mention the kosher meal to the gate agent and to a flight attendant as soon as you board. Before opening, check that both seals and the certification sticker are intact — the meal is heated unopened in the plane's non-kosher oven, and the double seal is exactly what makes that work.

When It Goes Wrong — Polaris Included
Money doesn't make you immune. There are documented cases of Polaris business-class passengers ordering kosher a month in advance — one on a Newark–Rome flight — and getting nothing at all. That's a seven-figure-lifetime-value customer in a lie-flat seat, watching everyone else eat a plated dinner while the crew brings apologies. Once the door closes, nobody can fix it: a sealed, certified meal either got loaded in the catering truck or it didn't, and no amount of goodwill produces one at 38,000 feet. Expect fruit, nuts, and whatever sealed snacks happen to be aboard. On a ten-hour flight, that's a long stretch of almonds.
