Sephardic roots rediscovered — a rising star for Jewish travelers
Portugal has seen a remarkable revival of interest in its Jewish and Crypto-Jewish (Anusim) heritage. The Inquisition drove Judaism underground for centuries, but descendants of conversos are reconnecting with their roots. Lisbon's Shaare Tikva synagogue is active, and a Chabad house serves travelers. The city itself is gorgeous — hilly streets, azulejo tiles, pastéis de nata, and golden light over the Tagus river.
